Representing Music Symbolically

چکیده
The automated understanding and generation of music is an area of research that raises problems that are central to the Artiicial Intelligence enterprise. Recent work at Edinburgh has aimed to use a symbolic AI approach for this eld. We indicate how a more abstract understanding of music representation uniies this approach, and how logical descriptions of hierarchical structures can be incorporated. We relate this work to alternative approaches, describe some projects carried out in this framework, and indicate planned future work.

The SEILS Dataset: Symbolically Encoded Scores in Modern-Early Notation for Computational Musicology
The automatic analysis of notated Renaissance music is restricted by a shortfall in codified repertoire. Thousands of scores have been digitised by music libraries across the world, but the absence of symbolically codified information makes these inaccessible for computational evaluation. Optical Music Recognition (OMR) made great progress in addressing this issue, however, early notation is st...
متن کاملSweepline and Recursive Geometric Algorithms for Melodic Similarity
This extended abstract gives an overview on two contentbased retrieval algorithms for symbolic music, developed earlier in the C-BRAHMS group [1], that took part in the Symbolic Melodic Similarity and Query by Singing/Humming tasks of the MIREX 2006 contest [3, 4]. Given two excerpts of symbolically encoded monophonic or polyphonic music, the query pattern and the target music, the purpose of t...
متن کاملSEMEX - An efficient Music Retrieval Prototype
The applied techniques are based on the assumption that music is representable symbolically. This is the case for most music; consider, e.g., the score notation of western music or MIDI. These are not, however, ideal representations; the score notation requires a conversion into a computer-readable form, and MIDI contains a lot of irrelevant information. Instead, music is represented by sequenc...
متن کاملTree structured and combined methods for comparing metered polyphonic music
Identifying copies or different versions of a same musical work is a focal problem in maintaining large music databases. In this paper we introduce novel ideas and methods that are applicable to metered, symbolically encoded polyphonic music. We show how to represent and compare polyphonic music using a tree structure. Moreover, we put for trial various comparison methods and observe whether be...
متن کاملString Matching and Geometric Algorithm for Melodic Similarity
This abstract gives an overview on two algorithms, developed earlier in the C-BRAHMS group (Lemström et al. (2003)), that took part in the MIREX’05 melodic similarity contest. Given two excerpts of symbolically encoded music, the query pattern and the target music, the task of both these algorithms is to find musically relevant occurrences of the query pattern within the target music. The first...
